Who hires the neighborhood kid to take care of their lawn?

Drive through your local neighborhoods on a warm Sunday afternoon and take a look around at the yards. What do you see? No doubt you will see everything from lush green lawns to yards that look like weed farms. You will also see lawns that look more like carpet or a golf course; or lawns that look more like freshly cut hay fields waiting to be baled. I pose a question for you at this point. Which lawns do you think the neighborhood kid is cutting? If you said the ones that look rough you are most likely correct. The other answer is that the homeowner didn't even hire the neighborhood kid and eventually cut it themselves. I'm not picking on the neighborhood kid who has the entrepreneurial spirit. I'm making a point that homeowners sometimes go the cheapest route and hire the neighborhood kid. I'm fine with that also. I'm more interested in the customer who wants a beautiful lawn and landscape; not the customer who just received the city ordinance notice for high grass that needs cut. I was once that neighborhood kid with a weed eater and a push mower. I cut lots of lawns that were out of control for a few extra bucks. It kept me out of trouble and humble. My point is that grass (or weeds) will grow and they do not cut themselves. Customers have options of cutting it themselves, hiring a professional service, or hiring the neighborhood kid. The neighborhood kid is going to be very limited with what services he can provide. A push mower for sure, and maybe a zero turn lawn mower if your lucky. But what about the professional weed control, shrub trimming, aerating, fertilization, and other services. Fertilizer and weed control requires a license and most kids won't even consider intensive manual labor. So, if all you need is for little Johnny to mow your lawn to keep you from receiving those nasty code enforcement letters and fines, then by all means give him a call. On the other hand, if you want a lawn that increases your property value, turns heads when people drive by, and provides a tranquil place relax, call a professional service.
